Los Medanos – Snowballs

There always has been some discussion, these rounded stones being lithophysae or not. Only few strongly weathered white pieces of matrix are left attached to the ‘balls’, if there are any … The to white clay decomposed hostrock covering the rough agate, has lead to the name Snowball.

I believe Snowballs actually are thundereggs, some of the rough are showing many pressure ridges clearly. These are an example of the ‘widely expanded’ thundereggs as ‘Coconuts’ and the small eggs from Little Naches bed 2.5.
